Vinayagar Agaval

Vinayagar Agaval
(Blank poem on Vinayagar)
By
Saint poet Avaiyar

(Avaiyar (meaning a very Old mother) was one of the very great women poets of ancient Tamil Nadu. (In Telugu even today mother is called Avva) Apart from being a great poet, she played a very great role in the politics of those days; by making the great kings obey her. There are many references to her being a great Devotee of Lord Subrahmanya. Historians are of the opinion that there were, more than one lady poet who called herself as Avaiyar. One such poet existed before the birth of Christ. This poet was a great story teller and social reformer. The next Avaiyar lived in the fourteenth centaury. Her well known work is AthiChoodi, which was written foer easy learning by Tamil Children. It is interesting to note that even today; AthiChoodi shows the simple path to live well, for all children. Vinayagar Agaval is another one of her great works.

Agaval means blank poetry and it is a song addressed to Lord Ganapathy. He is addressed as Vinayagar (he who removes obstacles) or Pillayar in Tamil. This prayer is an extremely popular one in Tamil Nadu. It clearly brings out the mastery of Avaiyar in the Yoga, thathric practices and Saivism, possibly derived from the contribution of Sidhas in Tamil Nadu and the Tamil Nadu Saivism.I have taken the liberty of understanding this great work based on the English translation of Mr.Layne little

Seetha kallabha chenthamaraippum,

While the anklets on the cool sandal anointed feet
Which has the color of the red hibiscus flower,
Sings various songs, while the golden waist belt,
And his clothes as soft as flower,
Shine in pretty and beautiful colors of the rainbow,
While his box like paunch, weighty tusks
Elephant like face, the saffron dot applied on it,
Five hands and the goad and rope that he has,
His blue body which attracted our mind,
Hanging mouth, his four sets of shoulders,
His three eyes, three trails of his feet’s,
His two ears, his shining golden hair,
His glowing broad chest wearing the holy thread,
His divine knowledge of Thuriya, his mastery over words,
Stood in awe at the wish giving elephant.

OH god who rides on an elephant and eats three fruits,
Now for taking me and making me yours,
You come in the shape of my mother,
Cut off the trance like feeling of this illusory birth,
Make clear to my mind the meaning of the
Five lettered Namasivaya, enter then in to my mind,
Step in to this world in the form of a teacher in this world of ours,
And tell me with happiness that this is its real meaning

Kodaayudathaal Peru (kodu) vinai kallainthe,

After removing my great fate by the weapon of his tusk,
After giving me very sweet and not boring advices in my ears,
After showing sweetest clarity in the case of Jnana,
After teaching me the trick to control my five senses,
After sweetly telling me about mercy which gives happiness,

After cutting of this birth as well the next and removing darkness,
After granting me mercifully the four stages of salvation,
After cutting off the trance created by the three types of ignorance,
After showing me how by one chant the five senses
Can be controlled and the nine gates of the body closed,
After teaching me how to control the chakras of the body using the goad,
After cutting off talk and making me stand firm,
After teaching me the alphabets of Ida and Pingala Nadi,

Idai chakkarathin eerettu nilaiyum,
Udar chakkarathin urappayum kaati,
Chanmuga thoolamum , chatur mukha sookshmamum,
Yen mugamaaga indhenakkaruli

After showing that the end of circle’s edge is in the head,
After making me realize that the snake keeps on hanging,
On the pillar that is at the junction of three realms,
After showing the silence at the junction of Kundalini,
After clearly telling me the chant to waken it up,
After pointing out the raging fire in the Mooladhara,
After telling me the idea of waking it up,
After telling me about the deathless state and the position of the Sun,
After telling me about properties of moon, the helper of lotus,
After teaching me the sixteen positions of the intermediate Chakra,
After showing me the position of wheels in the body,
After sweetly teaching me , the secret of Shanmuga,
And the principle behind the subtle four faces,

Puriyatta kaayam pulappada yenakku,
Theriyettu nilaiyum derisana paduthi,
Karuthinir kapaala vaayil kaatti,

And making me see the real meaning of them,

After removing the assets earned in the previous births,
After showing me the mental state where mind and words are absent,

After showing me the places of light and darkness in me,

Vithaga vinayaga virai kazhal charane.

After giving me limitless happiness by pressing me down in ecstasy in my ear,
After removing all problems, after showing me the way of grace,
After showing lord Shiva in the sound “Om”,
After pointing out the Shiva Linga within my mind,
After showing atom within atom and distance beyond distance,
In the joints of the well ripened sugar cane like body,
After clarifying the role of Vedas and sacred ash.
After making me one with the crowd of realized devotees,
After pointing out the principle of five letters “Namashivaya”,
After showing me the state of my mind,
After giving me the philosophic state and after ruling me,
My wise Vinayaka ruled me and I seek refuge in his feet.

Avaiyar's Vinayagar Agaval

The anklets
on the red lotus feet
of the cool baby elephant
sing many songs.

The golden waist chain
and fine skirts
resting upon his rainbow waist
beautifully shining.

His weighty tusk!

His elephant face
& the auspicious orange mark
is easy to perceive.

Five hands,
goad & noose,
his body of deep blue
has made my breast its home.

His hanging mouth,

four sets of shoulders,
three eyes,
and three musk trails...

His two ears,

with golden hair shining,
and three threads intertwined
upon his glowing breast...

He is the true knowledge:

Turiya, the Sleepless Sleep,
goes beyond
the word's meaning.

Wonder

has stood personified
as the Wish-fulfilling Tree!
As the Bull Elephant!

He who rides the mouse
sniffs out the three fruits.
I begged him,
"Take me now...
as your servant!"

He appeared as a mother
and showered his grace upon me.
Cleaved from me
the confusion that...
"Once born, I shant die."

Thus the pristine
and primal letters five
shall unite with me.
Shall came and enter my heart.

Assuming the Guru's guise
and keeping a sacred foot
upon this Earth,
he establishes life's meaning.

He joyously bestowed the grace
of the Path of No-Suffering.

Wielding his tusk as a weapon,
he weeds out
the cruel fruits of action.

My ears devour his teaching
without ever being filled.

He reveals the insatiable
Clarity of Wisdom.
The means to master the five senses.

He has sweetly graced me
with joyous compassion.

He proclaimed
that single thought
which shrinks
the delusionary power of the senses.

Putting an end
to this birth
and the next,
he has removed darkness,
and graced me with all
the four stages of mukti (enlightenment).

He cuts off the delusion
of the three impurities.

With one mantra
he showed how
the Nine Openings
and the Five Sense Doors
can be shut...

This is the Ankusha (elephant-goad)
of the six chakras:

Without stopping...
Standing firmly...
Let idle chatter be discarded.

He announced the letter
of the Idylla & Pingala
and showed that the end
of the Circle's Edge
is in the skull.

The snake hangs
on the pillar
that is the junction
of the three realms.

He helped me realize
it's tongue.

In the Kundalini
one joins the silence...

It breaks open...
and the mantra that rises up
comes out
because of his teaching.

The rising flame,
breaking out
of Muladhara,
is caused to rise
by the wind.

Born of the single thought
which he has taught.

He related...

The state of drinking Amrita,
The movements of the Sun,
& the character of
The One Who Favors the Lily (the Moon).

He revealed
the 8+8 facets
of Vishudha Chakra
along with all the qualities
of my bodies wheels.

He sweetly graced me
with the ability to contemplate
the six faces gross
and the four faces subtle.

He enabled me to perceive
the subtle body,
and gain the darshan
of the Eight States.

He has revealed
within my mind
the Skull's Gate,
and given the sweet grace
of being established in mukti.

He made me know myself.
He showered me with grace.
He pulled out past karma...
by its root.

Without a single word or thought
my mind is one with him.

He has concentrated my mind,
clarified my intellect,
and said,

"Light & Darkness
share a common place."

He presses me down
into the grace giving ecstasy.

In my ear
he renders limitless bliss.

He has weeded out all difficulty
and shown the path of grace.

He has revealed Sada Shiva
within the sound.
He has revealed the Shiva Lingam
within the mind.

And he has revealed that...

The smaller than the smallest,
The larger that the largest,
stands within…
like ripe sugarcane.

He made me understand
the role of the ash
smeared on the brows
of the devotees merged in truth,

with whom
he made me
one.

He made both heart & mind
achieve the state of knowing
the precious meaning
of the Five Letters.

Having given to me
the True Nature of All Existence...

I am ruled
by the wise Vinayagar...

at whose feet
I take refuge.

Ganesha Pancharatnam

Ganesha Pancharatnam

Slokam

Lord Ganesha or Lord Ganapati is the destroyer of obstacles. People mostly worship Him for siddhi, success in undertakings, and buddhi, intelligence. He is worshipped before any venture is begun. He is also the God of education, knowledge and wisdom, literature and fine arts. Lord Ganesha is also one of the five Gods - the worship of whom was popularized by Adi Shankaracharya; the other four being Vishnu, Shiva, Shakti and Surya. The worship of these five deities is called the panchaayatana puja. In some cases, Skanda is also worshipped. It is said that Ganesha was born when the eternal couple contemplated on "Ohm". If you view Lord Ganesha sideways, you will see the symbol "Ohm" in Sanskrit. That's why Ganesha is called "Ohmkara" and worshipped first. "Ohm" is the pranava mantram which means "Excellent Boat" (Prakriti +Nava = PraNava). The PraNavam is the only means to cross the ocean of worldly existence.

Ganesha has four hands, an elephant's head and a big belly. His vehicle is a tiny mouse. In his hands he carries a rope (to carry devotees to truth), an axe (to cut devotees' attachments), and a sweet dessert ball - laddoo (to reward devotees for their spiritual activity). His fourth hand's palm is always extended to bless people. A unique combination of his elephant-like head and a quick moving mouse vehicle represents tremendous wisdom, intelligence and presence of mind.
